A sunburn causes the skin to become inflamed, which in turn can cause you to experience pain. Sometimes even simple movements can irritate the inflamed skin. A cool compress can be used as a way to help cool down the skin and the burn. You may also want to try sitting in front of a fan as the cool air can help to provide some relief from the burn. Cool water can also help to reduce symptoms of a sunburn. Running the skin under a cool shower may help alleviate some of the pain.
You can also simply dip a cloth in cool water and then apply it to the areas of the skin that have been affected. When the cloth gets warm, simply run it under cool water and apply it again. This method can be used every five minutes up to ten times each day. You should continue doing this even when the symptoms begin to subside.
