15. Shaking
Most long-term alcoholics will eventually develop a partial or full tremor; this is because of the damage alcohol has eventually done to the brain and nerves over time, and the more severe the alcoholism, the more severe the shakes. You can expect to notice this in people who are withdrawing from alcohol, too, in which case it refers to the withdrawal symptoms of alcohol instead – the so-called “DTs” where fever and shaking are common.
The shake can be slight, though will usually occur whenever the alcoholic starts to sober up and the body and mind start to withdraw from the alcohol. In this case, this is usually the point where the alcoholic will also start to get irritable and start trying to source more alcohol in any way they can.
If an alcoholic is showing signs like this, then you should immediately seek medical attention – withdrawing without the assistance of a doctor (i.e. “cold turkey”) can be deadly.
