4. Urge
One of the most unpleasant aspects of ulcerative colitis is the feeling that you need to go to the toilet even when you actually do not. This is because of the inflammation and the irritation in the colon which is causing it to contract and to strain – thinking that there is something in there that is causing the discomfort.
The result can be that you keep running to the toilet, first to evacuate your bowels – often very soon after eating – and then again repeatedly even once they’re already empty.
You may eventually find that you are completely tied to the toilet and unable to leave. Try not to strain too much when you don’t actually have anything to empty however, as doing this repeatedly can actually be the cause of hemorrhoids (piles).
