11. Uncontrolled emotions
This isn’t true for all people who suffer from ALS, but there are many people who have a difficult time controlling their emotional responses. As a result, they may end up crying uncontrollably or constantly laughing. Known as the pseudobulbar affect, or emotional incontinence, this phenomenon often occurs alongside neurological disorders or injuries to the brain. Since ALS is a motor neuron disease, patients can be affected by the pseudobulbar affect. You may find that you are crying or laughing for no apparent reason and that you the crying or laughter may be completely out of your control. You might also laugh when you are angry, or cry when you are happy.
