5. Wheezing
After the initial stages of infection, the sinus develops post nasal drip. PND sends mucus into the respiratory tract where it thickens into phlegm. The infected individual coughs up the phlegm and may notice a slight wheezing sound as they exhale or inhale deeply. This wheezing sounds like rattling or whistling during breathing.
Wheezing occurs due to inflammation and a restriction of the airways in the bronchiole. The wheeze is most noticeable during exhalation. Air entering and exiting the lungs experiences greater pressure and creates the wheeze.
The wheeze is extensive with individuals suffering from chronic bronchitis. It’s especially noticeable during or after exertion from physical activities, such as walking upstairs. Wheezing will subside after the infection is gone.
Some individuals suffering from chronic bronchitis may experience wheezing for weeks or months afterward. This persistent wheeze is a sign of respiratory distress, and they should consult with their doctor. The physician may take a chest X-ray to ascertain the extent of the damage on the bronchiole.
