""Your appendix is a small pouch that is attached to the large intestine. It connects on the right side of the abdomen and is often an ignored part of the body. However, if this pouch becomes inflamed it can cause many significant issues, especially if a blockage occurs and it becomes infected.

There are not very many indications that infection or inflammation of the appendix has occurred until it becomes a medical emergency. This is why it is important to be aware of the signs that your appendix may be inflamed. The infection of the appendix may be caused by fecal matter, mucus, or another type of impurity. When the appendix is infected it can lead to peritonitis that needs to be treated right away.

If the appendix ruptures, bacteria and other poisons will be released into the body and this could potentially be fatal. However, most people that receive proper medical care for a ruptured appendix will recover without complication. Since being caught off guard with a medical emergency is not something that anyone wants to deal with, it is a good idea to become familiar with some of the signs and symptoms of possible appendicitis. Here are 8 of the symptoms that may be a sign that your appendix is inflamed and possibly infected.

1. Pain in the Belly Button

Often times pain from the appendix will occur near the lower right-hand side of the abdomen. The first sign that something may be wrong may actually be discomfort that occurs near the belly button. The pain will then move down to the lower area of the abdomen. This pain will often become worse if you move your abdomen or your legs. It also worsens if you sneeze or cough or are jarred in some way, such as a ride in a bumpy car. If you are experiencing the pain of this type it is a good idea to be checked out by a physician to rule out appendicitis.

""2. Pain that Gets Worse Rapidly

When the pain moves from the bellybutton to the lower area of the abdomen it can become extremely intense. Many patients describe this abdominal pain as they have never felt before. Appendicitis can cause pain that is severe enough to wake them up from sleeping.

This pain can increase in intensity very quickly, within just a few hours. If you are experiencing severe pain in the lower right-hand side of your abdomen, seek medical attention as soon as possible as it is likely your appendix is inflamed and could burst at any moment.

""3. Chills and a Low-Grade Fever

Getting the chills combined with a low-grade fever can be a symptom of many different types of illnesses. However, if you are experiencing a fever and the chills accompanied by an extreme amount of pain in your lower abdomen, chances are you are experiencing appendicitis.

If you have simple stomach pain with a fever of about 100 degrees, it is likely nothing to worry about. However, if the pain in your abdomen is severe and you have a fever of over 103, it could be appendicitis and you need to seek medical attention.

""4. Loss of Appetite, Nausea, and Vomiting

When you have appendicitis you may have a few days of simply not wanting to eat and feeling a bit sick to your stomach. While the loss of appetite and nausea can be the symptoms of many other illnesses, if this is accompanied by severe pain that becomes very intense and it does not go away in a day or two, it could be appendicitis.

You are not going to projectile vomit if you have appendicitis, but you may begin vomiting when you are suffering from an inflamed appendix.

""5. Diarrhea or Constipation

Like many of the other symptoms of appendicitis, diarrhea, or constipation may not be severe and will likely occur after you have already experienced some type of abdominal pain.

If you have a case of mild diarrhea and there is a lot of mucus in your feces combined with pain in the lower right-hand side of your abdomen, you should consider seeing your doctor determine whether or not your appendix is the culprit of your pain and discomfort.

If it is your appendix that is causing these issues, chances are that you will have to have it removed.

""6. Painful Urination

Since the location of the appendix is close to the bladder, a person suffering from appendicitis may notice that they are urinating more frequently. Not only do they have to go to the bathroom more frequently, but when they urinate it can be quite painful.

While this may be a sign of something else such as a urinary tract infection or bladder infection, it can also be a sign of appendicitis. Either way, if you are urinating frequently and it is painful to do so it is a good idea to see your doctor determine what is causing the problem.

""7. Gas and Bloating

There are many things that can cause gas and bloat. For example, eating a bunch of pizza and chasing it with beer is going to cause a bit of abdominal discomfort.

However, if you go to sleep after indulging in bad food and drink and then wake up and are still experiencing pain or if the pain has gotten worse, you should be aware.

It is also important to notice if you have been bloated for more than a few days and if the bloating is accompanied by pain in the bowel or if you have difficulty passing gas.

""8. Rebound Tenderness

One of the most significant signs of appendicitis is rebound tenderness. This occurs when you push on the lower right area of your abdomen and then when you release the pressure it is painful.

If you do this once and it hurts, do not do it again as this can put more pressure on the area that the appendix is located in and may cause further damage.

If you are experiencing this type of rebound tenderness in your abdomen it is important to see your doctor right away, especially if it is accompanied by any of the symptoms that are listed above.
