The shoulder is made up of three main bones. These are the humerus, scapula, and clavicle. Each of these bones works together in order to help you accomplish tasks using your shoulders. The labrum is the tissue that binds the scapula with the humerus.

When the labrum is torn it makes it difficult to function with the arm that is affected. There are many symptoms that can occur as a result of the labrum being torn. There are also many different things that can cause the labrum to tear. Repetitive shoulder motions, especially those that require your arms to lift above your head, may cause a labrum tear.

Athletes such as pitchers, rowers, and weightlifters often suffer from labrum tears. Most of the time a labrum tear will heal on its own with proper treatment in about four to six weeks. Here are 14 of the common symptoms of a labrum tear.

1. Grinding

One symptom that you may notice right away after tearing your labrum is a grinding sensation in your shoulder. The reason that you may notice this is because when the labrum tears it causes the scapula and humerus bones to contact each other, which in turn sounds like the shoulder is grinding each time you move it.

This is one of the reasons that early treatment is so important when it comes to a labrum tear. If you allow it to go on for too long, it can take longer for you to fully recover. In addition, the longer you go on without treatment, the more likely you are to cause even more damage to the shoulder, this includes the bones and the labrum. Your doctor will be able to put you on a proper treatment plan so that you will heal more quickly and be able to get back to your normal movements as soon as possible.

2. Locking

Along with a grinding feeling, you may also feel like your shoulder locks into place at times. This is a result of the function of the labrum, which is to keep the bones in their proper place. Typically, the humerus and scapula can move freely past each other because the labrum provides a buffer between the two bones.

When you suffer from a labrum tear, the bones are directly in contact with each other and this could cause them to get stuck. If your bones get stuck on each other you may feel like your shoulder is locked in place. If this happens you should not force your shoulder to move as you can cause even more damage.

Go to the emergency room right away so that a doctor can look over your injury. You will likely have the shoulder immobilized so that the bones do not cause more damage to each other.

3. Lower Range of Motion

If you have a labrum tear, there is a chance that you will notice that your range of motion is lowered. This is because your humerus and scapula will not be able to function the way that they are supposed to.

The clavicle does a lot of work and is a good bone, but it simply cannot do it all on its own. Any task that involves an overhead motion will be even more difficult if you have torn your labrum. Many people will simply try to go on with the injury and perform tasks that require them to have a full range of motion.

This is not a good idea as it can damage the labrum even more and can also ruin the strength of your bones. If your shoulder is not performing a certain task, it is likely because it is not able to do so. Make sure that you listen to your body and go to the doctor.

4. Loss of Strength

If you have a labrum tear, you might notice that you have a loss of strength in the arm that was affected. It is important to first determine the cause of this loss of strength.

You should consider the symptoms of a stroke, such as a drooping face, or the inability to say a tongue twister out loud. If you have difficulty with these tasks it could be a stroke and you need medical attention right away. If you do not have any of the symptoms of a stroke and experience loss of strength in your arm, it is likely a labrum tear.

You should not lift any heavy objects with the arm as this can cause more damage. You should find a ride to the nearest hospital and have your arm checked out. Driving with a torn labrum is not recommended, especially if you are experiencing a loss of strength.

5. Instability

Another sign of a labrum tear is feeling like your shoulder is slipping out of the socket. The labrum is a binder between the bones of your shoulder. When you tear your labrum, it is not able to hold the bones in place, which is why you may feel like your shoulder is going to slide out of its socket.

If you experience this sensation, the best thing that you can do is to stabilize your shoulder. Lay your arm on a soft pillow and keep it in place. You should then call an ambulance to come and get you.

The paramedics will be able to immobilize your shoulder in a way that it will not slide out of the socket while you are in a vehicle. Driving yourself is not a good idea as you will not be able to safely navigate the roads when only one of your arms is working properly.

6. Swelling

Swelling is one of the most common signs of a labrum tear. The damage in the area will cause blood to rush to the area that has been affected. The blood will start to pool in the area as a way to help prevent infection. It also starts to rebuild the tissue using amino acids as well as other nutrients.

If you notice swelling in your shoulder, this is a sign of the natural healing process, so it should not be considered as a negative. However, the swelling can cause some discomfort, especially if it starts to put pressure and strain on the tissue surrounding the area. The swelling may also make it difficult to move the spine and joints in a normal fashion.

If you notice swelling, treat with an ice pack alternating 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. This should help to reduce some of the swellings and alleviate some of the pain that is associated with a labrum tear.

7. Inflammation

If you tear your labrum, the area is likely to become inflamed. This is the natural response of the body to the injury. The inflammation of the area can make it more difficult when you are trying to recover. Modern medicine can help in these cases.

Most doctors will recommend aspirin or ibuprofen to help with some of the pain associated with a labrum tear. In some cases, if the tear of the labrum is severe, a cortisone injection may be used to help alleviate the pain that you are experiencing. Some reports have shown that the use of cannabidiol may be effective at relieving the pain that is associated with a labrum tear.

The reason for this is because the compound has natural anti-inflammatory properties. However, the studies on this compound are relatively new, but the data is promising. If you are in a lot of pain as the result of a labrum tear, it may be worth trying.

8. Pain During the Night

A person who is suffering from a labrum tear may have difficulty sleeping. The reason for this is because the pain can become worse at night. This may be caused by different movements during sleep. People who tend to sleep with their arms above their heads may experience pain when trying to sleep in this position.

When a person lies on the shoulder that is affected by a labrum tear, the pain may worsen. This can be difficult at sleep and rest are important for the healing of a labrum. Sleeping while wearing a sling can help alleviate some of the pain as it immobilizes the arm and allows it to rest.

If you are having difficulty sleeping because of the pain that you are experiencing, it is important to let your doctor know as they may be able to prescribe a sleep aid that may help. Taking an anti-inflammatory before you go to bed, may also help you sleep better at night.

9. Overhead Pain

If you notice pain when you reach your arm above your head, there is a chance that you have injured your labrum and possibly have torn it. There are many activities that you may perform that will cause pain if you have torn your labrum.

Reaching up for items on a higher shelf is one of the motions that can be difficult if you have torn your labrum. Even changing a lightbulb may be difficult as you have to reach above your head in order to remove the old lightbulb and put in a new one.

No matter what type of action you are performing when you notice that there is pain, it is important to take note of it. If you start to notice that there is a pattern of pain every time that you are reaching above your head, you may have torn your labrum.

10. Hand Tremors

Pain in the neck and shoulders is one of the first signs that you have torn your labrum. From the pain, you may develop weakness that can last throughout the recovery period and may never return to what it was before the injury.

One of the symptoms along with weakness that you may notice is a slight shaking or tremors in your hands. This tremor can last for years after the injury occurs. These tremors can make performing regular daily tasks more difficult.

At times the tremor may be so bad that you cannot pick up a heavy object or you may find it difficult to keep a fork stable when you are trying to eat. Moderate exercises in order to make the muscles strong once again can help you recover after the injury and may lessen the degree of shaking or tremors that occur.

11. Fever and Nausea

In some cases, the labrum may become infected. In these cases, a person may experience nausea or vomiting and will likely run a fever. Anyone who is experiencing shoulder pain and any of the other symptoms on this list and also runs a fever and is simply not feeling well should seek medical attention right away.

A fever is a sign of an infection and a medical professional should investigate the cause in order to make sure that proper treatment is provided. The labrum tear will need to be treated with rest, ice, and possibly physical therapy.

In addition, the infection that is causing the fever and other symptoms will need to be treated as well, possibly with a round of antibiotics. It is important to get the proper care needed to treat this issue in order to heal properly as letting this injury go can make the recovery time even longer and can lead to further damage.

""

12. Warm Sensation

A person who has torn their labrum may find that the area that is affected feels warm to the touch. This warm sensation may or may not come with swelling, inflammation, tenderness, and pain. Padding can be used in order to protect the area that is infected.

The padding will reduce the amount of contact with the area in order to keep it safe. In addition, you may want to apply a cold or ice pack to the area. This can help to lower the warming sensation that you are feeling. Ice packs can also help to reduce swelling and the pain from the area.

It is also recommended that you experience inflammation after exercising that you ice the area to help reduce swelling and inflammation. When you are recuperating from a labrum tear, it is important to make sure that you stay away from strenuous activities and get plenty of rest to allow the body time to heal.

13. Tingling and Numbness

When you have a labrum tear you may notice tingling and numbness throughout the arm. When you start to experience these symptoms you should make an appointment with your doctor right away.

The reason for this is because numbness and tingling sensations are symptoms of a number of different ailments and it is important to determine the underlying cause as soon as possible. Numbness and tingling could point to a nerve that is trapped, a damaged nerve from an injury, or it could be the result of circulation issues.

In some cases, it may be caused by a blood clot, which will increase your risk of having a heart attack or a stroke. Tingling and numbness are symptoms that should not ever be ignored and you should not try to treat these symptoms on your own. Determining the underlying cause is very important for your overall health.

14. Prolonged Pain

There are many types of injuries and other health issues that can cause a person to experience chronic pain. However, if you notice prolonged pain in the area of your shoulder, there is a good chance that your labrum could be torn.

If you find that the pain you are experiencing is prolonged, but only occurs when you put pressure on your shoulder, it is likely from a labrum tear and you should talk about your pain with your medical professional. Many people ignore the pain that they are experiencing and simply think they are just tired or that it will heal on its own.

Most of the time, the pain will continue to get worse with time. For this reason, if you are experiencing any type of chronic pain it is important to discuss it with your doctor so that it can be diagnosed as soon as possible and make the treatment more effective in the long run.
