When it comes to earaches, most of the time we think of children complaining of ear pain and having an ear infection. However, earaches occur in adults as well. Often times, the cause of an earache will simply be from having water or other liquid trapped in the ear. Swimming is one of the main causes of fluid becoming trapped in the ear and causing pain.

However, bacteria, wax, and foreign objects getting trapped in the ear can also cause a person to develop an earache. Ear pain can be quite awful as it can cause your balance to be off as well as simply being quite painful. If you are suffering from an earache there are several things that you can do in order to help alleviate some of the pain that you are experiencing.

Here are 14 natural remedies to try for an earache.

1. Moving the Earlobe

If you suspect that your earache is caused by fluid in your ear, the first thing you may want to try is quite simple, just wiggle the bottom of your earlobe. Tipping your head to the side and simply shaking it can actually help move the fluid down and out of the ear.

While you are shaking your head, pulling your earlobe out and shaking it can help as well. Gently pull your earlobe down and give it a jiggle while your head is tilted. If the water is not really stuck down in the ear canal, this method will often work.

Once the water has come out of the ear canal, you will likely notice a reduction in the pain that you are experiencing. Of course, if the pain in your ear is caused by bacteria or something besides water, this method is not going to work.

2. Use a Hot Compress

There are times when water and other fluid may get trapped inside the eustachian tubes. The eustachian tubes are what connects the middle ear to the area that is located just behind the nasal passages. This natural technique for getting rid of fluid from your ear can help to release any fluids that have become trapped in this area. You will want to wet a washcloth with hot water.

The water should be quite hot, but not scalding. You will then tilt your head to the side of your face that is affected and then place the cloth on the outside of your ear. You should leave it there for about half a minute or so. Then take it off for a minute. Repeat this process several times.

This should help to release the fluid that is trapped within the ear canal and provide you with some relief.

3. Use a Hair Dryer

If you are truly struggling with fluid inside of your ear and you cannot simply shake it out, a hairdryer may help. The hairdryer may help to make the water that is inside your ear canal evaporate.

First, you will want to set your hairdryer on the lowest setting possible. You do not want to burn your ear by using too hot of a setting. Hold the blow dryer about a foot or so away from your ear. You will want to move the dryer back and forth so that it is never blowing directly inside of your ear.

It is also a good idea to pull your earlobe down so that the warm air is blowing in the ear where the fluid is trapped. The warm air may help to get rid of the fluid as it will dry it out.

4. Vinegar and Alcohol Ear Drops

If your ear is truly bothering you and you cannot simply shake out the fluid from it, you may want to try some homemade ear drops. Alcohol can help to evaporate the fluid that is stuck in your ear. The vinegar can help to remove the earwax, which may be responsible for the fluid getting stuck inside your ear canal in the first place.

To make this ear drops you will want to combine equal parts vinegar and alcohol. You will then need to use a sterile dropper to put three or four drops of the solution inside of your ear. Once you have put the drops in, rub the outer area of your ear to get the drops down inside the canal.

Wait for about thirty seconds or sow and then tilt your head to the side in order to let the ear drops run out.

5. Hydrogen Peroxide

Another option for getting fluid out of your ears is to use hydrogen peroxide as ear drops. Hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant, which can help kill any bacteria that may be built up inside of your ear canal. The hydrogen peroxide can help to clear out bacteria, earwax, debris, and any trapped water or other fluid that has become trapped inside of your ear canal.

To use this method find a sterile dropper and apply three or four drops of hydrogen peroxide into your ear canal. You will want to wait about two or three minutes after putting the drops into your ear.

After waiting for about three minutes you will then want to tilt your head down to let the fluid drain out of your ear. You should not use this method if you have a perforated eardrum, an outer ear infection, or tubes in your ear.

6. Olive Oil

Another home remedy to help alleviate the symptoms of fluid in your ear is to use some olive oil inside of your ear canal. Olive oil can help to prevent the ear from becoming infected as well as repelling the fluid out of your ear canal. You will want to warm a small amount of olive oil in a bowl.

Use a clean dropper to apply a few drops of olive oil into the ear that is affected by fluid. After putting the oil in your ear you will want to lie on your side for around ten minutes or so. After about ten minutes you will then want to sit up and tilt your head to the side.

The fluid along with the oil should drain out quite easily. You may have to wait for several minutes in order to make sure that all of the oil and the fluid come out of the canal.

7. Chewing and Yawning

If you are suffering from an earache that is caused by fluid on your ear, there is a good chance that simply popping your ears may help. There are a couple of ways that you can do this. Making yourself yawn can help to move the tubes inside of your ears.

These tubes are likely where the fluid is stuck and simply stretching them and moving them can help to loosen the fluid and alleviate some of the pain that you may be experiencing. Another way to get your ears to pop is to simply chew. Chewing gum can help get the eustachian tubes moving, which in turn can alleviate some of the pressure and help get the fluid out of your ear.

Moving your jaw in any way can help loosen up anything that may be stuck inside of your ears, thus alleviating some of the pain that you may be having from your earache.

8. Use the Valsalva Maneuver

Another physical thing that you can do to try to get rid of any fluid in your ears is called the Valsalva maneuver. You want to be very careful when you are doing his move. The method can help to open up your Eustachian tubes so that the fluid can run out. Make sure that you do not blow too hard while doing this as it can cause damage to your eardrum.

To do the Valsalva maneuver you will need to take a deep breath while holding your nose closed with your fingers. You will then need to slowly blow the air out of your nose. Remember to not blow too hard as this can be damaging to the ear.

When you hear a popping sound it means that the Eustachian tubes have been opened. After doing this technique you will want to move your head to the side in order to help any fluid run out.

9. Ice Packs

If your earache is caused by inflammation, using ice may help to alleviate some of the pain. If your ear really hurts you may want to try to hold a cold washcloth or an ice pack next to your ear for about 20 minutes and then removed. You can do this several times each day. The ice or cold washcloth may help to numb the ear pain for a bit providing you with some relief.

This may be temporary, but it does help. If there is inflammation in the ear canal, holding ice near it to numb the area can be very helpful. However, it is important to note that if you are struggling with ear pain for more than a few days, a visit to the doctor to determine the underlying cause is recommended.

Your doctor will be able to determine the cause of the pain and also prescribe medications if necessary.

10. Garlic

There are many wonderful reasons why you should always have cloves of garlic in your cabinet. This great herb has been used for thousands of years in many natural home remedies. If your ear pain is being caused by a bacterial infection, garlic may be able to help fight off the bacteria causing you pain. To use garlic as a home remedy for ear pain you will want to crush up a clove and then dip a cotton ball in the juices.

11. Ear Drops

There are many over the counter ear drops that can be used to help alleviate ear pain. For some people, these over the counter medications are very helpful. If you have tried more natural remedies and not had much luck, using over the counter ear drops may be the next best step.

If your eardrum has burst or if you have had tubes placed in your ears in the past, it is not typically recommended that you use ear drops. It is always a good idea to check with your doctor before using any type of remedy to treat an earache.

If you are currently on any type of prescription medication you should discuss the use of ear drops and other home remedies with your doctor before you use them as there is a chance that they may interfere with your other medications.

12. Pain Relievers

Another option for dealing with ear pain is to take some over the counter pain medications. Ibuprofen, as well as other NSAIDs, can help manage the pain that is being caused by an earache. You should not use medications such as these in order to mask the pain. This is especially true if the earache is associated with another underlying condition.

If you are in constant pain from your earache, taking some over the counter pain medication can be helpful. However, they should not be used every day. If your earache is not going away, visiting the doctor is important in order to find the underlying cause.

Once your doctor has determined what is causing your earache, a proper treatment plan can be created. Most earaches will go away on their own after a few days. If it lasts longer than that, your doctor will be able to help.

13. Sleeping

When your ear is giving you a lot of trouble, it can be difficult to sleep. Not sleeping can further the issue as your body needs sleep in order to rest and heal itself. If you are suffering from an earache it is recommended to sleep in a more upright position.

Propping your head up on some pillows or even sleeping in a recliner can be very beneficial when you are suffering from an earache. By sleeping in a more upright position it can help to reduce the build-up of pressure located in the ear that is likely the cause of your pain and discomfort.

While it may be difficult to sleep sitting up or in an upright position, you may find that as soon as you sit more upright the pain in your ear will dissipate, which will make it much easier to get that rest that you so need.
