Trichomoniasis, often referred to simply as “trich”, is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). It is caused by an infection Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite. Generally, symptoms of the infection are diagnosed during a routine exam.

Trichomoniasis is a highly curable infection; but, if it is left untreated, those who have it are more likely to spread it – as well as other STDs. Also, pregnant women who are infected with this parasite are more likely to deliver a pre-term baby.

Since 70 percent of those infected do not present any symptoms, if you have this infection, it can be difficult to determine. With that said, there are some signs that could indicate Trichomoniasis. If you notice any of the following signs, make sure you schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.

1. Abnormal Vaginal Discharge

Women who are infected with Trichomoniasis may notice the presence of abnormal vaginal discharge. It is normal for women to experience some vaginal discharge. If the discharge is clear or milky white in appearance, it usually isn’t a cause for concern. However, if discharge appears yellowish or green in color, has a sticky texture, and has a foul odor, it could be a cause for concern.

As the parasite that causes Trichomoniasis infects the vagina, this female body part may produce odd-colored discharge. There are many conditions that can cause abnormal vaginal discharge. 2. Abnormal Penile Discharge

As mentioned Trichomoniasis affects both men and women. And while symptoms are more likely to present in women than in men, in some cases, men can exhibit signs of this sexually transmitted disease. One of the most classic symptoms of Trichomoniasis in men is abnormal penile discharge. For many men, some discharge from the penis is normal. It can occur as a result of being around, for example, prior to ejaculation.

However, if you experience discharge from the penis when you aren’t aroused, particularly upon waking, it could be a sign that you are suffering from Trichomoniasis. For both men and women who are suffering from Trichomoniasis, itching in the genital area can occur. As first, the itching will likely be mild; however, if this sexually transmitted disease is left untreated, in time, the itching can become severe.

Itching in the genital area is not always a cause for concern, as it could be associated with other things that are not the result of an illness, such as wearing tight-fitting clothing.
