Gastritis is actually a fairly general medical term that describes a number of conditions that all have one common theme, the lining of the stomach is inflamed. Gastritis inflammation is often is a result of an infection. This infection is typically caused by the same type of bacteria that causes the majority of stomach ulcers. Gastritis can appear suddenly and when this occurs it is referred to as acute gastritis. It can also appear slowly with time. This is referred to as chronic gastritis.

In some cases, a person suffering from gastritis will develop ulcers and it can also lead to an increased risk of developing stomach cancer. However, the majority of people who suffer from gastritis do not have any serious symptoms and the issue will resolve quickly with treatment. Let’s take a closer look at some of the possible causes of gastritis.

1. H. Pylori Bacteria Infection

The most common cause of gastritis throughout the world is a bacterial infection caused by H. pylori. Many people become infected with this bacteria during their childhood. However, not everyone that is infected with the H. pylori bacteria will experience any symptoms from it. H. pylori can cause either acute or chronic gastritis. It does not commonly cause erosive gastritis. It is thought by researchers that the bacteria is spread through water, food, saliva, and other types of bodily fluids.

Healthy individuals can often fight off the bacteria and for this reason do not experience any damage to the stomach lining. However, those who have weakened immune systems may suffer from symptoms of gastritis when exposed to H. pylori. Eating foods that contain probiotics, such as yogurt and fermented fruits and vegetables, provide good gut bacteria that can help to reduce the risk of gastritis developing from the H. pylori bacteria.

2. Overuse of NSAIDs

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs include indomethacin and aspirin. These medications are often prescribed to individuals to help reduce inflammation, for arthritis, and to protect the health of the heart. However, one of the problems with NSAIDs is that while they can help with some ailments, they may cause further complications in the body, especially in the gastrointestinal area. Some of the gastrointestinal complications caused by NSAIDs include erosions and ulcers.

Recent research has shown that overusing these medications can cause intestinal mucosal injuries. In fact, endoscopic exams have shown that the damage caused by NSAIDs in the small intestines is quite high. If you suffer from arthritis or health disease and are prescribed an NSAID for relief, make sure that you are only taking the amount that is prescribed. It is also important to try to reduce the amount of these medications that you are taking.

3. Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Consuming alcohol can cause many distresses in the body. Almost everyone knows that drinking alcohol can cause damage to the liver. However, what most people do not realize is that alcohol consumption can also cause damage to the entire gastrointestinal system. The constant presence of alcohol in the stomach can cause irritation to the lining. When this occurs and a person continues to drink alcohol, there is no time for the lining to heal.

A person suffering from gastritis related to alcohol use may have burning or pain in the upper abdominal area, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, excessive gas, a loss of appetite, and may have a bad taste in their mouth. Alcohol affects the intestines, stomach, and pancreas. Anyone that is experiencing the symptoms of gastritis who consume alcohol regularly should try to stop drinking alcohol as soon as possible. Continuing to consume these beverages can cause more and more damage, which may become irreversible.

4. Chronic Stress

The connection between stress and other health issues, including stomach problems is quite well-known. At some point or another this is something almost everyone has experienced. Chronic stress can cause anything from a bit of indigestion to chronic stomach issues. It is important to note that the research about stress in relation to gastrointestinal issues is still quite misunderstood.

There has not been any proven study that has shown a direct relationship between chronic stress and gastritis. However, with that being said, it is known that stress can cause the body to react in different ways. Stomach issues are common complaints among those who are dealing with stress. If you are constantly feeling stressed and have symptoms of gastritis, getting your stress under control may be all that is necessary to do in order to heal the stomach and have you feeling better overall.

5. Radiation Exposure

Each year there are millions of individuals that are exposed to ionizing radiation. This may be in the form of interventional or diagnostic radiotherapy and radiology. Additionally, radiological and nuclear disasters pose threats to individuals throughout the world. People who undergo radiation therapy as a treatment for another health issue may experience radiation gastritis as a result. The radiation that a person receives as treatment can cause damage to the lining of the stomach.

When this occurs, the individual may start to have symptoms of gastritis. If you have undergone radiation treatment or have been exposed to radiation and suffer from the symptoms of gastritis, it is important to discuss it with your doctor. There are many treatments available that can help alleviate some of the symptoms that you are suffering from and your medical professional will be able to help you find the right one for your situation.

6. Injuries and Impact

At times gastritis may be caused by an injury that a person sustains. When the stomach or abdominal region takes a sudden impact, it can cause damage to the lining. When this damage to the stomach lining occurs gastritis symptoms may appear. When it comes to possible causes of gastritis an injury or impact to the stomach area is fairly common. Of course, it depends on the type of injury or how hard the impact to the area was.

The stomach is a fairly strong muscle and can withstand quite an impact without much damage occurring. However, if you have suffered from a sudden impact on the stomach or have otherwise injured the abdominal area, there is an increased risk that gastritis may occur. Some people may experience symptoms of gastritis after an injury while others will not. If you do suffer from symptoms of gastritis, discuss them with your doctor.

7. Cocaine Use

Cocaine provides a stimulating effect on the body for a short amount of time. The drug causes an increase in dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is associated with feeling happy and satisfied. When a person uses cocaine the levels of dopamine increase, causing the user to feel euphoric. While this may sound great, using the drug can have some awful side effects as well. Frequent use of cocaine can lead to many side effects such as aggression, panic, paranoia, anxiety, impaired judgment, depression, and more.

In addition, cocaine use can weaken the immune system and cause many health issues. This includes damage to the lining of the stomach. When the damage to the stomach occurs, it may not be able to heal properly because of a weakened immune system. Continuing to use cocaine after the damage has occurred can cause even more health issues to arise.

8. Bile Reflux

There are many common health issues that may cause a person to vomit. Most of the time, vomiting is caused by something that a person ate. While vomiting is not pleasant, it is a common side effect of many gastrointestinal issues. However, when a person is vomiting bile it can cause damage to the lining of the stomach. This damage can cause gastritis to occur. Some of the reasons that a person may vomit bile include food poisoning, binge drinking, not eating, or a blockage in the intestines.

If you are vomiting bile and this happens frequently, it could be the sign of a medical condition. Bile reflux occurs when bile backs up from the liver into the stomach and the esophagus. This condition can develop after having gastric surgery. Bile reflux should not be confused with acid reflux as they are different. Acid reflux is the result of acid backing up from the stomach into the esophagus. At times a person may experience both of these ailments.

""

9. Autoimmune Conditions

Autoimmune conditions can cause a person to develop what is called autoimmune gastritis. When this occurs the immune system of the person begins to attach the lining of the stomach. There is no apparent reason why the immune system begins to do this. This type of gastritis that is caused by autoimmune disease is often chronic.

However, it is non-erosive. Some individuals that suffer from autoimmune gastritis may have a severe or chronic infection caused by the H. pylori bacteria. There are other causes of autoimmune conditions as well. Typically, a person that is suffering from autoimmune gastritis will continue to suffer from different symptoms of the condition throughout their life as there is no cure. However, there are treatments for this condition that a medical professional can prescribe in order to alleviate some of the pain and other symptoms that are associated with autoimmune gastritis.

10. Crohn’s Disease

There are as many as 700,000 people in the United States who suffer from Crohn’s disease. This disease is an inflammatory bowel disease. There have been major advances in terms of treatment for this disease, but they’re currently is no cure. Crohn’s disease is most often found in the colon and small intestine. However, it can affect any area of the gastrointestinal tract, from the anus to the mouth. It may affect some areas of the gastrointestinal tract and skip others.

A person who suffers from Crohn’s disease is more likely to experience gastritis. This makes sense as it is a disease that affects the GI tract. Since gastritis is a broad term that covers any damage to the stomach lining, Crohn’s disease is likely a cause of many types of gastritis. Gastritis can be treated in Crohn’s patients, but it is more difficult to treat because of the symptoms of the disease.

11. Irritable Bowel Syndrome

About ten to twenty percent of the general population suffers from IBS. Of these patients, the majority also typically suffer from chronic gastritis. The relationship between irritable bowel syndrome and gastritis is quite significant. Irritable bowel syndrome is a flood of several physiologic events that are started by inflammation, infection, and psychological disturbances. About a third of those who suffer from IBS state that they suffer from upper abdominal discomfort.

In fact, this is one of the most common reasons that a person with IBS will seek medical attention. The constant straining, feeling of incomplete evacuations, and the repeated visits to the toilet are all stressful for the stomach and gastrointestinal tract. These stressors can cause damage to the lining of the stomach. When this occurs, a person may suffer from even more symptoms. Typically, IBS patients suffer from chronic gastritis that may go away but return regularly.

12. Unhealthy Diet

Perhaps one of the most common causes aside from the H. pylori bacteria is simply a person’s dietary habits. If you suffer from either acute or chronic gastritis, changing your dietary habits can go a long way to help. Fatty foods are one of the main causes of these issues, so avoiding foods that are high in fat is often recommended. Adjusting the amount of fiber that you consume is also recommended as this can help keep things cleared out, which in turn can alleviate the symptoms of gastritis.

Limiting the intake of dairy is also recommended as many individuals that suffer from gastritis are sensitive to lactose. It may take some time to adjust your diet in order to alleviate the symptoms of gastritis, but continuing to eat unhealthy and fatty foods is going to increase the chances of flare-ups, that could be avoided by making these changes.
