Fasting is known as the practice of abstaining for food, usually for a short period of time. Why would anyone want to do that voluntarily? There are plenty of reasons, the first being for religious reasons, but there are also plenty of non-religious reasons why you should consider fasting.

Simply, fasting can be great for your overall health: It gives your body a chance to reset and detoxify. These days, our bodies are bombarded with all sorts of artificial colorants and chemicals – it’s in the food you eat, in the things you drink. It’s even in the environment we live and breathe. Fasting gives your body a chance to start again, and it’s great for people who want to make a new, healthy start.

Sometimes fasting can even be recommended by your doctor: There’s a good reason why people are told to fast for at least a day before a big surgery.

1. Great for the Liver

The liver’s primary function is clearing the body of toxins, and anything you put into your body gets filtered through your liver. Now, consider the fact that most of the foods that you eat contain all sorts of artificial chemicals and natural compounds like pesticides, salts, sugars, vitamins, minerals, MSG, dextrose… Okay, not all of those we’ve listed are technically bad – but they all filter through the liver.

Do you realize what kind of large-scale pounding your liver takes on a daily basis? Even if you live a healthy life, your liver could still be taking strain.

Fasting can be great for the liver; when your body isn’t being bombarded with salts, colorants, sugars, alcohol and artificial chemicals, it gets a chance to rest – and your body gets a chance to process all of the harmful chemicals.

Be careful with fasting if you have existing problems with your liver: Consult your doctor.

""

2. Mood Improvement

The chemicals that you put into your body can affect your hormone levels: Just one example of this is chicken, which is often injected with hormones and antibiotics while they are alive. These antibiotics and hormones filter through the chicken when it’s prepared and eaten – chicken soup is often recommended for flu because of the antibiotics, not so much for the hormones.

These hormones can cause imbalances inside your own body, especially if you eat a lot of hormone-containing foods like pork and chicken. These imbalances lead to mood changes, usually irritability or depression, over time.

Fasting can help your body get the chemicals causing these mood changes out of your system so that you can feel healthier – and very often happier. Be careful with fasting if you find that it has the opposite effect; consult your doctor and stop the fasting routine until you have if this happens to you.

""

3. Blood Pressure

If you have high blood pressure, then your doctor will likely recommend that you start to cut out salt as much as possible: Salt is well-known for being one of the primary causes of high blood pressure and can send your blood pressure skyrocketing if you have existing problems with your blood pressure. This is why people often have heart attacks after a large, rich, salt-filled meal.

Fasting can help your blood pressure to stabilize, though you should be careful to continuously monitor your blood pressure throughout the process: If your blood pressure goes too high or too low, then you could be putting yourself in danger and might need to make some adjustments.

Normal blood pressure should be 120 over 80; small variations in blood pressure measurements are normal, though too high or too low warrants seeing your doctor.

If you aren’t sure how to approach fasting with existing blood pressure issues, also consult your doctor for advice on how you can fast for your health.

""

4. Heart Health

There are plenty of good things that fasting can do for your heart. All of the things you eat on a daily basis puts a lot of strain on your heart, especially if your diet is very high in fats and salts, and not so high in vegetables. Eventually, especially when combined with a stressful and fast-paced life and career, this will start taking a huge toll on the heart – and it’s exactly what puts most people at risk of having a heart attack.

Fasting forces your body to slow down, and gives your body a chance to get rid of all of the toxins it has accumulated. When you are able to reset your body by fasting, you basically give your body an entirely new start when you begin eating again – and this time, start by eating healthier, more natural foods.

If you find that you are experiencing chest palpitations or pain in your chest, make an appointment with a cardiologist for a heart scan.

""

5. Colon Health

All of the foods you eat will directly accumulate in your colon, and your colon could be the reason why you are feeling tired, lethargic and generally unhealthy. There are plenty of things that could affect the colon: For example, plenty of foods can block up your system and leave you feeling bloated and constipated; other foods can literally “scrape” your insides and cause small internal fissures.

There are also stomach ulcers, runny stools and a whole list of more colon disorders that could be tied to the rest of your health – and the reason why your health might not be feeling up to scratch.

Fasting gives your colon a chance to go back to basics: When you fast, you manage to clear the toxins out of your body – and the waste out of your colon. And you will be extremely surprised at just how much of a difference this can make to your overall health.

""

6. Stomach Health

Is your stomach as healthy as it should be? In most cases, the answer is no. Everything you eat goes directly to your stomach, and most people simply just don’t follow a completely natural and healthy diet. Even those who do follow a healthy diet find that they occasionally cheat on their diet with something they know is extremely unhealthy.

Your stomach is also home to plenty of healthy bacteria – stomach flora – and there are plenty of things that can affect your stomach flora negatively, which is largely related to the foods you eat – but can also happen after you have taken a course of antibiotics.

Fasting allows your stomach to reset itself just as much as your body, and it gives your stomach the time that it needs to recover. If you have a stomach ulcer, you might even be given the order to fast at least partially by your doctor while your stomach recovers.

""

7. Decline in Heartburn

Heartburn is a condition generally caused by too much stomach acid that pushes up through the throat; the overproduction of acid is most commonly caused by something that you ate, which is why heartburn is such an extremely common condition after a large meal. If you have repeated issues with heartburn, you can usually track it down to your intestinal health and your diet.

Fasting can give you a chance to get your body clean and then see just what food it might be that’s causing your heartburn once you get back to eating again. As a general tip, stick to healthy and natural foods without additives, and drop the consumption of salts, sugars, and acidic foods in your diet after fasting to see what happens.

If the problem still persists, then you should make an appointment with your doctor to take a closer look at what’s going on inside your body to find the root cause of your heartburn.

""

8. Less Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a condition whereby the arteries are impacted with the collection of fats; the arteries literally become “clogged up”, and this leads to a reduction in blood flow and can have a range of dangerous consequences for your health, including an increased risk of heart attacks or strokes.

Cholesterol is often caused by genetic factors, but can be worsened with the intake of a diet that contains all of the “wrong”, unhealthy fats – yes, the kind of fat that drips from a cheeseburger is as unhealthy as you thought it was. If you want to give your body a fresh start and reduce cholesterol, fast.

This gives your body a chance to remove all of the toxins, and combined with a healthy diet afterward you can reduce your risk of developing cholesterol. Also, make sure that you have your cholesterol tested regularly.
If you find that you have high cholesterol,, keep a constant eye on your diet, and monitor your blood pressure and heart health.

""

9. Removal of Toxins

Your body accumulates plenty of toxins over time: It’s in the food you eat, the air you breathe, it’s even in the soil you walk on. Toxins are so commonplace that there’s almost nothing you can do to completely avoid exposure to toxins except for locking yourself up in a large, insulated bubble forever. Or, of course, you can just detox instead.

Fasting is one of the best ways to detox – though you should remember to combine a fasting routine with plenty of fluids, including milk and water, and never to extend your fasting time for too long. If you want to stay healthy, never fast for more than a couple of days at a time – you’re trying to improve your health, not set a world record.

Combining plenty of fluids with your fasting spell ensures that you aren’t dehydrating in the process, and you are still able to take in more nutrients from milk and juice than you would think.

""

10. Pain Relief

Could fasting help with pain relief? Almost certainly yes, and research done in recent times can back this up. Sometimes pain can be caused by the chemicals that your body is bombarded with – for example, did you know that acidic foods like tomatoes can be a major cause for developing conditions such as gout? Fasting gives your body a chance to recoup, and restarting your diet after a fast should be done with plenty of thought about what you should be eating.

Also, take note of any pain you are experiencing and make an appointment with your doctor if the pain continues: Pain is often your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong, and your doctor should be able to find the underlying cause and recommend the best course of treatment.

If you find that fasting makes your pain worse in any form, cease fasting and consult your doctor for professional advice on how you should approach your fast.

""

11. Good for the Kidneys

Your liver isn’t the only organ in your body that has the job of processing out toxic chemicals; this is also something that comes down to your kidneys. Most of the substances that filter out through your body, including toxins in food and some types of medication, will filter through your kidneys and be expelled through your urine.

When your kidneys are bombarded with toxins, your health will start to show signs almost immediately: You will feel tired and slugging, experience pain in your lower back (which is really your kidneys) and in extreme cases you will develop yellowing of the skin and eyes. This is a sign of severe kidney dysfunction and means that you should not fast at all: Consult your doctor if this is the case.

For the person with healthy, somewhat bombarded kidneys, a fast can do wonders – and combined with fluid intake, your body will feel much better after a short fast.

""

12. Energy Benefits

One of the first signs that something is wrong with your body is lethargy: A complete and total lack of energy that tends to stick around no matter how much sleep you might be getting. This can be due to a number of things but is often because of too many toxins that have accumulated in the body.

Fasting, as you should know from the rest of this article, is a great way to press the reset button for your body and digestive system. Take a few days’ worths of a break from everything you have been bombarding your body with, and you’ll feel much better as a result – you’ll feel happier, be healthier, and have more energy to do the things that really matter.

If you find that fasting is making you feel more lethargic instead of less, then there could be something else undiagnosed wrong with your health; make a thorough list of your symptoms if this is the case and take this information to your doctor.
