A brain aneurysm is as serious as it sounds. It’s basically a swollen area, caused by a bulging or ballooning blood vessel within the brain. Since it’s on the inside, the symptoms are usually all we have to go upon before a proper diagnosis.

An aneurysm usually resembles a berry dangling from its stem. It can leak fluids and even burst, causing a hemorrhagic stroke from bleeding right inside the brain. Luckily, though, most brain aneurysms aren’t likely to burst.

They may not even cause any health issues or side effects but are detected during check-ups for other problems.

However, it’s only logical that we take certain steps to prevent a brain aneurysm before it occurs. This would obviously prevent an aneurysm rupture as well. The exact causes of brain aneurysms are not really known, but here are some of the factors that increase such a risk:

1. The Aging and Gender Factor

It’s widely agreed among medical health experts that one major factor leading to brain aneurysms is that of age. This makes quite a bit of sense since our whole body is growing weaker as we age. It only stands to reason that the weaker the blood vessels are, the more likely they would be to develop aneurysms.

The resulting enlargement would also be more likely to rupture. Hence, older individuals should go for regular screenings in order to rule out brain aneurysms and their threatened ruptures.

Statistics have also been supportive of the idea that aneurysms develop as we age. Brain aneurysms are much more likely to be found in adults than in kids. They’re also more likely to happen in females rather than males. Of course, the risk of such aneurysms developing with age can be diminished by eschewing certain bad habits.

2. Smoking Cigarettes

One of the habits we’re talking about here is that of smoking cigarettes. Many people still have the unfortunate habit of smoking cigarettes, and here’s another reason why they should stop immediately.

In fact, those who are around smokers should also be careful about getting screened for aneurysms on the regular, since they’re taking in a lot of secondary smoke. Such passive smokers can even be more susceptible to brain aneurysms and other issues connected with smoking than smokers themselves. It’s hence important that smokers and passive smokers should get regular screenings for brain aneurysms and be more wary of the symptoms involved.

Quitting smoking may lead to a lower risk of such issues, but an aneurysm may already have taken place before that. Hence, even if you’ve quit smoking, you should get regularly checked up for around a year afterward just to be on the safe side.

3. Blood Pressure Issues

High blood pressure is commonly linked to several other problems, including hypertension, stroke, heart attacks, etc. Many people may not know this, but having an unhealthy blood pressure condition could also increase the risk of brain aneurysms.

In addition to increasing the likelihood of an aneurysm, high blood pressure could also lead to the heightened possibility of a rupture. It’s hence not at all recommended that anyone ignore their fluctuating or dangerously high blood pressure levels. These are not issues to be taken lightly even if we take the brain aneurysm risk out of the picture.

Since high blood pressure could also cause dangers like aneurysm ruptures, it’s all the more important that a patient takes immediate steps to control their health. This would include changing up their diet, exercising regularly, meditating, and taking medicine regularly. Such habits could stave off several major issues.

""

4. Abusing Drugs

Like smoking cigarettes, drug abuse of any kind is never recommended. While all hallucinatory and unhealthy drugs should be avoided as a rule, cocaine is commonly cited as one of the major causes of brain aneurysms.

This substance, along with LSD, heroin, and several others, can be responsible for damaging our bodies in ways that we can’t even fathom. Brain aneurysms are just one of them. Needless to say, the chances of a ruptured brain aneurysm is also high on the charts for a drug addict.

It’s hence essential that anyone who’s addicted to cocaine or any other drug should be steered towards a rehabilitation center as soon as possible. With time and effort, rehab therapy could bring the body back to health and reduce the chances of brain aneurysms. However, those who are undergoing rehab should also be regularly screened in order to rule out brain aneurysms.

""

5. Heavy Drinking

Alcohol consumption is again not a recommended habit, even if it’s in small amounts. Some people turn to alcohol as a way to forget all their problems, which only makes the situation worse. Alcoholism is a hereditary disease that can make a person dependent upon alcohol for their very survival. Needless to say, consuming a large amount of alcohol on a regular basis can lead to several complications, both mental and physical. Brain aneurysms are just one of them.

It’s recommended that a heavy drinker gets regular screening for brain aneurysms as well as for several other problems. Even if they’ve been clean for several months, they might still be at risk for such irregularities. Those in charge of guiding alcoholics through a rehabilitation program should be responsible for making sure such screenings are done on time. It’s best to be alert rather than be surprised.

""

6. Head Injuries

Bad habits and exposure to questionable elements aren’t the only causes that could increase the odds of brain aneurysms. The issue may be brought about by a direct physical blow to the head itself. This could be the result of a road accident, a fall on a construction site, or any other event that injures the head in some manner.

This kind of brain aneurysm is known as a dissecting aneurysm and may need surgery to prevent further enlargement or rupture. Head injuries should hence never be ignored. Screening should be planned as soon as possible after the accident takes place. This preventative measure can result in proper diagnosis and treatment before the situation turns life-threatening.

Screening after a concussion is also necessary. If a brain aneurysm is detected, it may just need to be monitored to ensure it isn’t growing at an alarming rate.

""

7. Blood Infections

Blood infections could come about as a result of bad bacteria entering the body through a wound, scratch, cut, or even a hair follicle. This sort of infection naturally weakens the blood vessels throughout the body and can hence even lead to aneurysms in the brain.

This occurrence is called microbial arteritis or a mycotic aneurysm. This aneurysm would be the result of the arterial wall getting infected by the unwanted and malicious bacteria. The name ‘mycotic aneurysm ‘ was first only applied to mushroom-shaped aneurysms that arose from subacute bacterial endocarditis.

It’s now generally used to categorize any intracardiac and extracardiac aneurysms that come about as a result of infections. The one exception here is syphilitic aortitis.
It’s important to know here that mycotic aneurysms aren’t caused by fungal organisms. However, blood infection could cause aneurysms all over the body, including the aorta as well as the brain.

""

8. Tissue Disorders

The risk factors for brain aneurysms discussed so far have been a result of outward physical action leading to this result. However, this doesn’t mean that brain aneurysms aren’t a risk directly from birth.

There are, in fact, several disorders and issues at birth that could signal the intrusion of a brain aneurysm at the moment or later on. Like many diseases, these aneurysms can be genetic as well as developed over time. One of these disorders is known as the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. This is a connective tissue disorder that can be passed from parent to child. Its main symptom is the weakening of blood vessels, which obviously contribute to the likelihood of swelling up, bulging, or ballooning out.

This syndrome is not the only connective tissue disorder that can be present at birth. If a parent knows about their disorder, they can take preventative steps for their child.

""

9. Polycystic Kidney Disease

This disease is another disorder that a person might inherit from his or her parents. A polycystic kidney disorder is a term used when there are several cysts in a person’s kidney or kidneys. Cysts are sacs filled with fluid. These can put a lot of pressure on the kidney function in general. They also lead to heightened blood pressure. As mentioned above, high levels of blood pressure are a common cause of brain aneurysms.

This condition, paired with the burden on the kidneys, could very well result in dangerous aneurysms that might rupture over time. The cysts in the kidneys could grow to a very large size, even enlarging the kidneys themselves.

There are several eating and exercise habits that we can change in order to do away with polycystic kidney disease and have our kidneys functioning better. If left untreated, the kidneys could be irreparably damaged.

""

10. Extra Narrow Aorta

The aorta is a blood vessel that’s majorly responsible for supplying blood to the whole body.

It’s quite a huge part of our body, being as thick as a garden hose and connecting the heart to the abdomen and chest. Needless to say, if something is wrong with the aorta, it signals trouble for the rest of the body.

When the aorta is extremely narrow (also known as a coarctation of the aorta), it’s not going to be able to give the needed blood to our body. Since the brain also needs a high amount of blood rich in oxygen, its blood vessels are going to get weaker with a narrow aorta. As a result, brain aneurysms could become much more likely. Proper and regular screening would determine if the aorta is the correct size. If it’s not, we’d have to undergo treatments to correct it.

""

11. Brain AVM

Brain AVM, short for Cerebral arteriovenous malformation, occurs when there’s an irregular connection between the veins and the arteries located in the brain. This sort of connection would serve to impede the blood flow between these pathways, which can lead to highly abnormal results. Among these are brain aneurysms.

This is not a condition that is usually brought about by external factors. It’s an issue that’s usually present at birth. As mentioned in the very beginning of this discussion, brain aneurysms would usually occur after one is an adult. Hence, it’s completely possible to be born with this condition but not be at risk of an aneurysm until the patient is an adult.

Brain AVM is rarely hereditary but can be detected by screening after symptoms like seizures and headaches. It may also cause serious brain damage and even a stroke as well as brain aneurysms.

""

12. Family Genetics

While not all the risk factors of brain aneurysms related to both are hereditary, a family history of such issues definitely puts one at risk.

If you have a first-degree relative that has been diagnosed with brain aneurysms, you probably have a heightened chance of getting some in your life as well. This could be a sibling, a parent, or even your child.

If the doctors have declared your offspring as being at risk for brain aneurysms, make sure your whole immediate family gets regular screenings in order to better deal with the situation.

Those who may be more prone to brain aneurysms should also be careful to make their habits as healthy as possible. They should be even warier of smoking, overeating, drinking, and abusing drugs than other folks. Regular exercise and healthy eating should also be part of their everyday routines.
