Glaucoma is the eye disease used to describe the weakening of sight in the eye and damage to your eye’s optic nerve. This nerve is the channel through which your eye carries out messages and functions sent to your eye from the brain. This nerve damage depending on the severity at which the disease is experienced can either result in temporary visual disturbances or permanent loss of sight.

In the United States of America about 3.3 million citizens live with glaucoma, while 2.7 million people within that figure range from the ages of 40 and older, live with the most common form of Glaucoma – Open-Angle Glaucoma. There are 5 types of Glaucoma, namely Open Angle Glaucoma; Acute Glaucoma, Congenital Glaucoma, Secondary Glaucoma, and Normal-Tension Glaucoma. Diagnosis of the type of Glaucoma experienced by a patient can be made through a series of tests; here are some common tell-tale signs of glaucoma:

1. Pain In The Eye

The process of nerve damage or its build up in the eye can cause severe eye pain due to the pressure caused by the fluids in the eye no longer flowing correctly. Angle-closure glaucoma is usually characterized by pain in the eye. This form of Glaucoma largely affects African Americans and Asians due to their natural eye shape being more susceptible to blockages. Angle-closure glaucoma is also said to be found in certain other eye conditions.

The pressure and pain factor in Angle-closure glaucoma is caused by the closing of the angle between the iris and cornea from the aqueous humor fluid which is supposed to flow throughout your eye is trapped in one place. This type of Glaucoma can lead to permanent blindness so it is advised to take immediate action from the time an individual starts experiencing pain as the development towards a complete blindness can be swift.

2. Changes In The Eyeball

Glaucoma in many cases is detected by periodically testing your eyes with your Ophthalmologist. Regular testing is recommended amongst patients who have a family history with Glaucoma, as well as those who have experienced eye injuries or an accident related to the eyes. Due to adults over 40 is more prone to different strains or Glaucoma, it is also recommended that they too have eye examinations conducted at least every year to two. This is important as many patients living with Glaucoma, are sometimes unaware until it is too late.

These visual tests not only assist their doctors to monitor any gradual changes in the eye that may occur but to also note any development in the shape of the eye or changes as they often result in problems around the flow of the gas in the eye. Eye specialists conduct visual acuity tests; visual field tests, dilated eye exam tests, tonometry, pachymetry, ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, and optic nerve imaging.

3. Visual Disturbances

Quite often due to studies have shown, and advice given by doctors, everyone tends to think Glaucoma is limited and has to first be experienced by pain in the eye and then necessary action taken. This could not be false. Studies show that patients with normal eye pressures can have Glaucoma and instead exhibit one of the other common symptoms. A visual disturbance can range anywhere from blind spots insight when looking through the eye, a blurred vision or even rainbow halo’s appearing around highly lit areas.

The eye pressure damages nerve fibers in your optics creating blind spots which, if not taken seriously can lead to blindness, as the eventual nerve can be fully destroyed. There is currently no cure for Glaucoma so early diagnosis assists the patient in slowing down the process as much as possible, as then the eye specialist can launch a series of remedies based on the patient’s development.

4. Blurred Vision

Blurred vision under Glaucoma can often be mistaken for Myopia, a short-sightedness of the eye, and Glaucoma can also be mistaken for Myopia. It is very important then that the two distinctions be made so that the right treatment can be prescribed. Dr. Simon K. Law, MD of the Jules Stein Eye Institute, noted in a study that high myopes may not have Glaucoma, but the presentation looks like Glaucoma and vice versa. Due to this reason, research into how the two though quite similar in behavior and nerve appearance has been ongoing for almost a century.

Simply put, it is important that factors such as family genetics, health, and eye testing are monitored and kept on record as it is the only Glaucoma can be picked up. The progression of Myopia is quite different from Glaucoma and high-risk groups such as diabetics, African Americans, age groups over 60 and those with diagnosed family members, make it easier to distinguish.

5. Tunnel Vision

Tunnel vision refers to the loss of sight around the edges of the eye while maintaining clear visuals in the central parts of the eye, hence the term ‘tunnel vision’ which describes at best the kind of vision such a patient would be experiencing. Unlike the complete blurring of the eye, a somewhat fair amount of vision is still left. It is quite rare that any other eye disease but Glaucoma, be the reason for a tunnel vision.

Once again, it is important to religiously have your eyes tested as this kind of sight loss according to studies is rarely accompanied by any pains or symptoms of the like until vision loss occurs. It is often also termed as the ‘silent thief’ of sight because it falls under Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma which hardly carries any of the pain symptoms Acute Angle Glaucoma carries. It can also develop after head injuries, disease or stroke.

6. Night Halo’s

Night Halo’s fall under your Acute Angle Glaucoma due to the discomfort one can suffer or experience from it. The patient experiencing this may experience halos, bright round circles, forming around objects of light like street lights, headlights and anything of the like. This reaction is a normal response to light but differs in the case of Glaucoma as the patient may struggle to regain focus in vision; may experience a sharp headache as a result and worsen the visual quality of the eye if left undetected.

The retina, which is the lining at the back of your eye used to send messages to your brain through the optic nerve, can suffer heavily if not accompanied with necessary treatment as it means, it no longer functions well against light and all it projects, are glares and halos. This kind of vision also occurs mainly in an aging eye and requires medical attention as it can lead to blindness if undetected.

7. Swelling In The Eye And Redness

Red and swollen eyes are also indicative of Glaucoma and specifically acute angle Glaucoma as the bloodshot eyes are rarely accompanied without a headache, dizziness or nausea. A combination of these is experienced due to the strain the veins in the eyes are taking and creating while trying to see. It is also recommended that one get the assistance of a professional due to the fact that over-the-counter prescriptions no matter how highly recommended are most likely to damage vision further instead of assisting the patient.

Red or swollen eyes may also be indicative that the patient may also suffer either from diabetes or high blood pressure. In such a case, the necessary treatment methods must also be administered by a professional who can prescribe the correct medication. It is important that a proper remedy is given, as any further damage can also lead to blindness. This symptom is also mostly found in adults over the age of 65.

""

8. Nausea

Nausea and vomiting is also a common symptom that can be experienced when suffering unaware of Acute Angle Glaucoma. It also seldom manifests itself on its own, but instead is usually accompanied by eye pain; halos around lights, vision loss or alteration, bloodshot eyes, and dilated pupils. When a patient gets to the point where they emit these symptoms together, it is then classified as a medical emergency.

It is important that they seek medical attention at a hospital-level due to the fact that nausea and vomiting, can either be continuous with little end to it, or it may occur in rounds which will progress in aggression until the necessary attention is given to the patient. Each bout of sickness can lead to severe vision loss. Acute Angle Glaucoma, compared to Open-Angle Glaucoma, is quite rare, therefore is important to take note of what medical attention needs to be sought in the case that it happens.
