The occurrence of epistaxis commonly referred to as nosebleeds are not a rarity. This term mainly applies to those who suffer from more than just the occasional nasal bleed.

Nosebleeds are common experiences especially for children under the age of 16. Some people experience it severely through a heavy flow or by fainting to the point where they might need to go see a medical doctor and others rarely have an issue with it.

However, medical practitioners from Harvard have also taken up the challenge of coming up with ways people can deal with this type of bleeding. A study in the Ochsner Journal estimated the at least 60 million Americans suffer from nosebleeds, annually. Epistaxis is not life-threatening, it is spontaneous as your nose can start to bleed from anywhere, and can last for a couple of minutes.

Quick action is required to get the bleeding under control. With this in mind, you may find the 10 tricks to stop a nosebleed helpful.

1. Relax

When a nose starts to bleed many times people start to panic. They start to stress out, move around with their head tilted back and frantically look for tissues or towels to press to the nose. Children who are really young will start to scream and others even begin to cry. The first thing to do is to try and calm down.

By worrying too much and panicking more then you are most likely to make the bleeding worse. You should avoid laying down but try to sit up in a cozy position. Make sure that your head is tilted slightly forward so that the blood does not flow down your throat. Place a towel under your nose to stop the blood from dripping to the floor or clothing. Close your eyes and start to relax and wait for the nosebleed to end. It will end in less than fifteen minutes under good health.

2. Pinch The Nostrils

Once you have positioned yourself in a situation that is relaxing, another way to stop the nosebleed is by gently pinching the nostrils. Use your thumb and place it on the side of your nose and place the index finger on the other side of the nose. Then slowly and gently move the fingers to the nasal cartilage. Still with your thumb and index fingers on your nose and with the head tilted forward begin to pinch the nose.

Make sure that you are pinching far back on your nose, so much so that your actual nose has enough space to twitch or it won’t be as effective. Pinch your nose for around five minutes without releasing your thumb and index fingers.

Also, breathe through the mouth. If the nosebleed has not stopped then you are probably doing something wrong and it is better to try again by pinching slightly lower to the nose or maybe higher.

3. Get Something Cold

Nosebleeds are very common especially in hot areas or in a person having higher body temperature compared to normal. That is why it is important to try and cool yourself down. This is by reducing your body temperature and this will then allow the bleeding blood clots to increase, which in turn can stop the bleeding. That is why it is a very popular notion for people to grab an ice pack.

While your nose continues to bleed you can gather some ice cubes and have them wrapped in a towel. Then you can place them on top of your nose and on the cheeks. Try and not apply the ice directly to the nose.

Another approach is by placing the ice cubes into your mouth. This will cool your body immediately. It will also continue to keep your body temperature low and for longer. You can also suck on a popsicle and give more time for your nosebleed to end.

The best way to apply the medication to your nose is by getting a small ball of cotton, spraying the medication into the cotton and then putting it into your nostrils. Keep the cotton in your nose and pinch your nose for less than ten minutes. Because it’s a nasal spray is medication be careful not to overuse it.

5. Stop Fidgeting With Your Nose

Children tend to play with their nose, this creates irritations around the nasal area and can lead to nosebleeds. It is important as a parent to make sure that your children do not play with, pick or massage the nose. It is advisable to also clip the child’s fingernails to avoid injuring the nose. This is also by being careful as to where you are walking so as not to injure your face. When the nose is disturbed from its normal state this can be very harmful. This is because a bruise on the inner fragile blood vessels of the nose can lead to an unfortunate heavy nosebleed.

Also when people frequently rub their nose then it is possible to loosen up dried blood clots that were holding back past blood vessels and this might just result in a recurring nosebleed. A great way to make sure that children do not play with their nose is by keeping their fingers busy. This is through games, telling them to hold on to a certain toy or by asking them to cook with you.

6. Buy A Humidifier

The dry air around the home environment can also result in frequent nosebleeds. This is because it dries out your nasal passage. This regularly happens during winter when the climate changes. This will make the blood vessels in the nose crack and dry up.

And if you are not using a nasal spray to keep your nose moist then it is recommended to use a humidifier. A humidifier is a small technological device that increases humidity in an indoor area space. It is also a cleaner way to send out moisture to your nose.

They are also very flexible as you are able to carry them everywhere and take them to wherever you are living at that moment. There are also consequences to using them such as noise, looking after the water tank and also being able to look after the filters. This may occasionally seem tiring. However, looking after the humidifier is very important because an unclean one can cause bacteria to grow and can also create allergies that will just result in a bleeding nose again.

People who drink alcohol on a regular basis are more likely to suffer from the nosebleeds compared to people who do not drink quite as much. This is because the alcohol will hinder the blood clotting process, therefore, extending the duration of the nosebleed.

This also applies to when people are heavy smokers. When you put a cigarette in your mouth and you frequently smoke than it can irritate the inside of your nose and dry it out. This also applies to children who experience second-hand smoking. They breathe in the bad oxygen from the smock which can lead to the indoor of the nose cracking, and the blood clots breaking away, thus leading into a running bloody nose.

This is also seen from people who live in areas with factories or working in firms that release smoke into the air. The chemicals such as sulfuric acid, ammonia, and gasoline can irritate the nose.
