""It’s a horribly unsettling feeling when you get a bout of dizziness and it can make you feel very unsteady on your feet. Not only can you feel at risk of falling through, but it can also make you feel less trusting in your own body and less certain of your reality. You might wonder if the world really is moving and you might even second guess whether you’ve been drinking!

And this is actually exactly what happens in the body too. You see, your body will often associate a mixed signal from different senses as being a sign that you’ve been poisoned or you are very ill. Thus, it begins to want to purge the system and you can, therefore, start to feel sick and nauseous and you might even be sick. This only adds insult to injury as the world spins and it’s just one more reason to deal with the problem as quickly as possible.

So what causes this dizziness? Where does it come from? Well, it can have a number of origins but generally, this is to do with misinformation coming from one of your senses. Usually, our brain takes input from a number of different senses (sight, balance, touch) and uses this to get an idea of which way up you are. But if you feel like you’re moving one way due to the movement of fluids in your eat but you look like you’re stationary… that’s when you can start to feel funny. And this is precisely why you get travel sick on a boat!

But enough about the cause of dizziness… how do you go about curing it? In this post, we are going to examine some popular home remedies for dizziness that should offer immediate relief and that might even be able to form the backbone of a management plan.

Read on and let’s discover 19 different home remedies for dizziness…

1. Hold Onto Something

Sometimes the simple answers are the best. If you have ever had a little too much to drink on a night out and then felt the world spin around you, then you probably will have naturally reached for a steady surface. This helps to ground the body and brain and it tells you with certainty where ‘down’ is.

Of course, holding onto something can also help to prevent you from falling. Just make sure that you aren’t likely to bang your head on it on the way down!

""2. Drink Water

Drinking water is a great solution for a vast range of issues. For starters, a little cold water can help to wake you up and freshen you up and provide just the jolt to the senses you need. More likely, it can treat dizziness that is caused by dehydration.

Here, the blood may have become thicker and more viscous, making it harder for it to reach the brain.

Not only that, but the brain shrinks when it doesn’t have enough fluid, just as a sponge does. As it gets smaller, it can then pull away from the inside of the skull which causes pain, brain fog, and yes – dizziness.

""3. Deep Breathing

Breathing correctly can help to fix dizziness for a number of reasons. For one, it is a great choice for treating dizziness that has come on from lightheadedness or hyperoxia. For instance, many people will feel dizzy during a panic attack which is because they have hyperventilated, filling their blood with too much oxygen.

Correct breathing involves using the stomach. To do this, you first relax the ab muscles, which will allow the abdominal cavity to become hollow, letting the diaphragm drop in. This then allows you to expand the lungs from the bottom, all the way to the top, taking in a large drawer of breath as you do.

Try to count as you do this, keeping each in-breath and each out-breath consistently timed.

""4. Rebreathing

Another solution for panic attacks and hyperoxia, in general, is to try rebreathing. Here, you take a paper bag and then hold it over your face and nose to breathe into.

The idea is that you’re going to use up all of the oxygen in the paper bag, leaving you with a bag of carbon dioxide. Now you’ll be breathing that and as you do, the levels of oxygen in your brain will return to normal!

""5. Exercise

If you experience a lot of dizziness, then a long-term way to address this might be to look at your fitness. It could be that the heart is having a difficult time pumping blood to your brain, which in turn might be responsible for feelings of dizziness and lightheadedness.

Exercise regularly and focus on things that strengthen the heart such as running or swimming. Do this especially if you are overweight and you feel dizziest when engaging in strenuous activity. Always talk to your doctor first, however.

""6. CBT

Another option for those that are struggling with a panic attack of other causes of hyperventilation is simply to try and calm back down. Easier said than done, sure.

However, if you focus on reflecting on the thoughts that led to your panic, then you can address each one and try to reason your way out of it. This is the central concept behind CBT and it is something that many people have had a lot of success with.

CBT stands for ‘Cognitive Behavioral Therapy’.

""7. Epley Manoeuvre

Of course, your dizziness may in fact be diagnosed as vertigo. Vertigo is not a condition as much as a symptom and it can actually have a number of different underlying causes. One type of vertigo is known as BPPV or Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo.

This form of vertigo is caused by the formation of crystals inside the ear canals. These can end up affecting the tiny hairs in the ear that are meant to detect the movement of fluids and when that happens, you can start to get false signals that make you feel uneasy and off-balance.

The Epley Manoeuvre is designed to help remove these crystals while also resetting the brain to remember ‘which way’s down’. To perform this, you should sit on the bed and then turn your head 45 degrees left or right. Place a pillow beneath you and then lie suddenly horizontal on that side with the face-up. Hold the position for 30 seconds and then repeat facing the other direction. Now turn the head and body on its side and then sit up slowly when vertigo has subsided.

It’s hard to explain, so if this has left you confused, try checking out some YouTube videos!

""8. Head Rotations

Another good option for resetting the brain and reminding it where everything goes in the world is to use head rotations. Here, you simply rotate your head round and round in one direction relatively slowly and then continue back in the other direction.

Doing this can cause the fluids in the ear to move around and the hope is that they’ll eventually settle in place and allow you to feel better.

""9. Watch the Horizon

Your ears handle your sense of balance, which is also known as equilibrioception. However, it’s important to recognize that your ears aren’t the only things that are responsible for your sense of balance.

Remember, vertigo occurs when not all your senses line up – so if the sky appears to be the wrong way around you feel rough.

Finding the horizon can help you to make sense of your senses and to reattune, especially if you’re in a moving vehicle.

""10. Lie Down

Another good option is to simply try lying down. Once again, this helps to rest things: the inner ear fluid will move and you’ll have contact with the ground while looking up.

This is also again a good way to avoid falling and to get some rest which may well be badly needed!

""11. Clean Your Ears

Remember the ears are responsible for your sense of balance and this is often where the problem lies. Balance issues can be a sign of loss of hearing or they can also be the result of general ear infections.

These cause inflammation and discomfort in the ear and that in turn causes the signals to get upset and make you feel dizzy.

Clean out your ears and if you suspect you might have an infection, consider speaking with your doctor.

""12. Sleep

Another common cause of vertigo is simply a lack of sleep. And either way, when you sleep you’ll have a good chance to recovery, rest, and hit that all-important reset button!

You’ll just need the world to stop spinning for a moment first.

""13. Neck Massage

Another cause for ongoing vertigo is that you have pressure, swelling, or an injury on one side of your neck. This then places pressure on the nerves which can again upset signals to the brain.

Now it might think that you are actually tilting your head when you aren’t and because your senses don’t align with this information, you might end up feeling ill.

Getting someone to gently massage your neck can really help with this and it’s also a very good excuse to get your other half to massage you!

""14. Eat!

While dizziness can be the result of mixed senses or illness, it can also be much more straightforward.

That is to say that in many cases, you might just be hungry and this is then likely to cause low blood sugar.

The brain needs sugar in order to operate and thus when this happens, you feel nauseous, shaky, and dizzy!

""15. Head Massage

Another type of massage well worth getting is a head massage. There are multiple reasons for this. For one, this can help to relax muscles in the head and face which can otherwise cause headaches and dizziness when they become too tight and place pressure on the scalp. This is what we call a ‘pressure headache’.

The other way this helps is that it encourages blood flow to the brain. This is important as it will deliver oxygen and nutrients to the grey matter, to support healthy and normal function and combat this cause of dizziness.

""16. Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba is what you call a vasodilator. This means that it causes the blood vessels (veins and arteries) to widen or dilate. In turn, this means that more blood can make it around the body and to the brain.

There are a few different vasodilators out there on the market but the reason that we’re focussed on ginkgo is that it has been shown to specifically increase blood flow to the brain. Seeing as that’s what we want, this is a good choice!

You can also use another similar substance for the same effect called vinpocetine. Interestingly, both of these have been used to boost brain performance too!

""17. Caffeine

Caffeine is ye old reliable when it comes to curing tiredness and brain fog and that can go for dizziness too. Caffeine works by removing a substance in the brain called adenosine. This is what builds up throughout the day and makes us feel tired and sluggish.

If you get some caffeine in you then this can reduce brain fog and in some cases that might then also result in a reduction in dizziness!

""18. Lemon

Sometimes a strong smell or taste can actually be enough to give you a jolt and to get all your senses working in unison again.

Lemon is bitter enough to do it and if that doesn’t work then vitamin C can also increase the production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. This too could potentially help you to overcome dizziness.

""19. Medication

Finally, consider the role of medication.

That is to say that there are two different ways that this might be a remedy. The first is that you might be using medication that is causing your vertigo. Check on the backs of packaging – this is actually a very common side effect and so you might simply need to consult your doctor about changing to a different course of treatment.

The other possibility is that you have a form of vertigo best treated with medication. For instance, if you are suffering from epilepsy or severe headaches, the medication might be able to help you to reduce the symptoms and feel better again. Likewise, medication can help to manage panic attacks and more. You should always discuss persistent vertigo with your doctor, to rule out more sinister causes.
