Coconut oil""When it comes to unpleasant conditions, hemorrhoids just about ticks all the boxes. Painful? Tick. Uncomfortable? Tick. Embarrassing? Tick tick!

Hemorrhoids also referred to as piles, are caused by prolapsed, swollen veins located in the lower area of the anus. The walls of these vessels become stretched and that leads to inflammation, irritation, bleeding, and redness.

There are several different things that can trigger a case of hemorrhoids. These include aging, diarrhea, sitting for long periods of time, sitting on hard o uncomfortable surfaces, pregnancy, straining, lifting heavy objects, old age, etc.

Anything that places pressure on the anus, either in an acute fashion or over a long period of time, can eventually lead to hemorrhoids. This is a reason that office workers should be especially careful and should look into the comfort of their seats and taking regular breaks to stand up.

One of the early signs of hemorrhoids is bleeding on the toilet. There are many causes for bleeding when you go to the toilet and some of these are cause for concern, while others are nothing to worry about. If the blood is bright red, then it likely will have come from around the outside of the anus or at the very end of the digestive tract, suggesting that you have nothing to worry about. If the blood is much darker, then that suggests it came from further inside, in which case you may wish to consult with your physician.

If it is indeed hemorrhoids, then there are a number of different options for treating the problem or at least lessening the symptoms at home.

1. Change Your Chair

One easy way to address the symptoms in the short term and to prevent the issue from recurring in the long term is to consider changing your chair. If you sit on a hard or uncomfortable chair in your office, then this constant pressure can be enough to cause the formation of piles.

Speak with your manager, or if you work from home, look at replacing the chair yourself. This is a health and safety issue and it is something that should be taken very seriously in any office.

""2. Orthopaedic Seats

Likewise, a similar option is to invest in an orthopedic seat. This is a cushion that you can place on top of any regular seat that is designed to take the pressure off of your coccyx or tailbone.

This is often shaped like a toilet seat with a gap at the back. This places the pressure onto your quadriceps so that your buttocks will be levitating above the seat with no pressure on it.

Of course, this can offer immediate benefits and relief because there will be no pressure on your backside. In the long term, these seats can again prevent the issue from recurring.

""3. Cold Compress

Another way to get some immediate relief is to use a cold compress. This can take the shape of a piece of ice wrapped in cloth, or it can be a wet flannel. Either way, this will help to constrict the blood vessels and that way reduce the amount of blood that is making it to the hemorrhoids. Interestingly, this can help to accelerate their death.

And of course, cold can help to numb an area and thereby provide some immediate relief also.

""4. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is something of a ‘media darling’. Right now, every health blogger seems to absolutely love coconut oil and recommend it for a wide range of different purposes, whether that’s moisturizing, whether that’s shaving, or whether that’s sticking in your coffee in order to give yourself an extra shot of energy.

Well, now we’re recommending that you put it down your backside! Coconut oil can help to provide some immediate soothing relief for your hemorrhoids as can any oil or cream. At the same time, it is also a fantastic source of saturated oils, medium-chain fatty acids, and more.

It will moisturize and nourish the area and lubricate the area so that stool can slip through less painfully.

""5. Lemon Juice

Okay, so this one might sting a little! But applying some lemon juice can help you to accelerate the death of hemorrhoids thanks to the citric acids that it contains.

At the same time, lemon juice also provides a rich source of antioxidants and vitamin C. This can be absorbed through the skin in order to help protect and repair the area.

You’ve heard of sucking lemons!

""6. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is one of the most popular and often-recommended options for killing off hemorrhoids. It works both by providing more astringent properties to help burn and kill off the hemorrhoids and also by offering anti-inflammatory effects in order to reduce swelling and help ease the pain.

Remember, swelling is one of the main issues when it comes to hemorrhoids, so anything that can help with this will be a very useful addition to your diet.

""7. Warm Baths

We looked at the benefits of using cold in order to help heal hemorrhoids, well now how about a warm bath? Taking a warm bath will help to relax the muscles in the area, thereby providing instant relief and soothing and reducing the pain and discomfort. At the same time, heat can help to increase blood flow to an area thereby offering you more antioxidants and nutrients to aid recovery.

A warm bath is a great solution to many different problems and this will also help you to remove bacteria that could lead to an infection. You can even add some essential oil drops to provide even more benefits.

Just make sure to wash the bath out thoroughly afterward for the benefit of your cohabitants!

""8. Contrast Therapy

It might sound like contradictory advice being told to use cold compresses and warm compresses. Well… it’s not.

That’s because you can always just go ahead and use both! Start with one and then switch immediately to the other. This is what we call contrast therapy and it is using the benefits of both kinds of treatments for the maximum overall effect.

The cold will help to reduce swelling and constrict the bloodflow to kill off the piles. The warmth meanwhile will soothe and relax you while ensuring that enough nutrients reach the area for maximum benefits.

""9. Tennis Ball

No, I’m not suggesting a game of tennis. Instead, I’m suggesting that you take that tennis ball and stick it into your nightclothes. The aim here is to put it between your back and the bed, to prevent yourself from rolling onto your backside in the night.

And the reason that this is a good idea, is that it stops you rolling onto those piles: thereby giving them more of a chance to recover and also preventing you from waking frequently in the night yelling in pain!

""10. Turmeric

Turmeric is a very common home remedy for hemorrhoids which is due to the high curcumin content.

This is antimicrobial and antiseptic, which can help to prevent you from getting an infection. At the same time, it also reduces inflammation and this can ease comfort as well as encouraging rapid recovery.

Add some turmeric to some water and then apply to the area with a little glycerine.

""11. Tea Bags

Another favorite is to use teabags. These are useful for treating a range of unpleasant rashes and for treating hemorrhoids. That’s because tea bags are cooling and they also contain a large number of nutrients – particularly antioxidants to help the body recover and repair itself.

Antioxidants work to combat free radicals that can otherwise damage the cells and eventually break all the way through to damage the DNA and cause dangerous, potentially-cancer-causing mutations. Then there are the tannins that are well known for their soothing benefits.

This is the same reason that you see people place them on their eyelids at spas!

""12. Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is a popular essential oil that carries a wide number of benefits. Not only is this rich in anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, but it also has a mint-like cooling effect. This can provide instant relief and relax the whole area, even numbing some of the pain and desensitizing the piles to pain.

At the same time, using any oil like this can also provide the benefit of lubrication. As anyone suffering from piles will know, the issue is most pronounced when you have to pass stool – which can be very difficult to do!

By applying a little eucalyptus, you can help this to slide through easily and painlessly!

""13. Gentle Wash

Why a gentle wash?

Well… do you fancy a vigorous one?

Taking a gentle wash is a good way to clean up the area and remove any bacteria that might lead to an infection. It will also help you to relax the muscles and remove any feces that you couldn’t get when wiping.

Add a little salt for extra antiseptic benefits.

""14. Analgesics

Want immediate and effective relief for the pain in particular? Then, in all honesty, there is really no better solution than to take some painkillers. Painkillers will provide pain relief and help you to go about your business as usual.

The best types of analgesics to use are those that will increase blood flow and that will thin the blood. In particular, look for blood thinning options such as ibuprofen. Because this thins the blood, it will also help to reduce the amount of blood flow getting to the piles and therefore to reduce the swelling.

This works especially well if you have combined the ibuprofen or aspirin with other strategies on this list such as using a cold compress.

""15. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is yet another essential oil that has a number of great benefits. Witch hazel contains a lot of tannins just like tea bags, but at the same time it is also astringent, it is also anti-inflammatory and it is also soothing.

To use witch hazel, take a small cotton ball, drench it in witch hazel and then apply to the area carefully. Not sure which of these many different essential oils will provide the best benefits? Then why not get the best of all worlds by mixing a few together and applying that way?

""16. Prunes

We’ve talked about the problem of passing stool. Well, one of the very best options for reducing this particular problem, is to consume prunes. While prunes don’t directly treat hemorrhoids, they do provide you with an excellent source of fiber and they are also rich in sorbitol. Sorbitol is useful for making stool easier to pass and works by drawing water into it and thereby softening and diluting it.

This can make the process of going to the toilet significantly less painful. And they’re also rich in beneficial nutrients!

""17. Sitz Bath

The best option of all though is to take a sitz bath. This means you’ll be soaking the area in warm water, with or without additional ingredients. So rather than just bathing, you’ll simply be soaking the area for a while. This can be soothing too.

Once you’re done, apply a little aloe vera or another of the essential oils on this list to protect the piles and to allow them to heal without interference from infection.

Hopefully, one or all of these solutions combined will provide you with the relief you need!
