The reason this happens is that estrogen is what causes the uterine lining to become thicker each month.
If there is not enough estrogen, the uterine lining will not thicken, and if it does not thicken it will not shed, which is what occurs when you have your period. If the amount of estrogen within your body remains low, your uterine lining may not become thick enough to shed at all or if it does, your period may be light and not last very long.
